New to a Gurdwara? Everyone is warmly welcome. Here is what to expect and a few simple points of decorum.
ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਆਉਣ ਵੇਲੇ How to Visit the Gurdwara
These customs are shared out of love and respect for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and the Sangat. If you are unsure of anything, just ask — sevadars are always happy to help.
ਸਿਰ ਢੱਕੋCover Your Head
Everyone covers their head inside the Darbar Hall. Bring a scarf or rumāl, or use one provided at the entrance.
ਜੁੱਤੀ ਉਤਾਰੋRemove Your Shoes
Leave your shoes on the racks in the lobby before entering. Washing your hands (and feet, if you wish) is welcomed.
ਹੱਥ ਧੋਵੋWash Your Hands
A simple act of cleanliness and respect before entering the Guru’s presence.
ਸਾਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇDress Modestly
Wear modest, comfortable clothing. You will be sitting on the floor, so loose clothing is ideal.
ਮੱਥਾ ਟੇਕੋBow to the Guru
Walk to the front and bow respectfully before Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, then step back and take a seat on the floor.
ਭੇਟਾOffering (Optional)
You may place a donation in the golak as you bow. It is entirely optional — never required.
ਫਰਸ਼ ’ਤੇ ਬੈਠੋSit on the Floor
All sit together on the floor as equals. Sit cross-legged, and avoid pointing your feet toward the Guru.
ਲੰਗਰ ਛਕੋJoin Langar
After Diwan, everyone is invited to share Guru Ka Langar — a free vegetarian meal served to all, seated together.
ਫ਼ੋਨ ਬੰਦPhones on Silent
Please silence your phone and be mindful, so everyone can focus on the Kirtan and Gurbani.
ਜੋ ਮਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ Kindly Avoid
ਤੰਬਾਕੂ ਮਨ੍ਹਾNo Tobacco, Alcohol or Drugs
These are strictly not permitted anywhere on the premises. Please do not bring them onto Gurdwara grounds.
